Frequently Asked Questions About Sorting Grapples

What is a sorting grapple used for?
A sorting grapple is a hydraulic grab attachment for excavators used to pick up, sort and load irregular materials such as demolition rubble, scrap metal, timber, rocks and green waste. The multi-tine design grips mixed materials securely for precise placement and sorting.
Which excavator size do I need for a sorting grapple?
MB Crusher sorting grapples are available for excavators from 2 to 45 tons. MCM Group will recommend the correct model based on your excavator's operating weight and hydraulic specifications — contact us for advice.
Can I use a sorting grapple for timber handling?
Yes. Sorting grapples are well suited to forestry operations for grabbing and loading logs and timber offcuts. The tine spacing can grip long, irregular pieces that bucket-style attachments cannot handle effectively.
Do MB Crusher sorting grapples have a rotation motor?
MB Crusher S4 sorting grapples feature a hydraulic rotation system, allowing the operator to orient the grapple and its load without repositioning the excavator. This significantly speeds up sorting and loading operations.

On South African demolition sites, sorting grapples are used to separate mixed demolition rubble into clean concrete (for crushing), steel (for scrap), timber and general waste — a sorting process required before materials can be recycled or disposed of at licensed waste facilities. Manual sorting of demolition rubble is slow, costly and presents significant safety risks to workers. A sorting grapple mounted on an excavator performs this task mechanically, in a fraction of the time.

Waste sorting facilities and transfer stations use sorting grapples to feed material onto conveyors, stack sorted waste and load containers. The grapple's ability to pick up irregular, lightweight material — plastic, cardboard, vegetation, rubble — that a conventional bucket would scatter makes it the preferred tool for waste-handling applications.

MB Crusher sorting grapples (the MB-G range) rotate 360 degrees, allowing the excavator operator to grip, orient and place material with full rotational freedom without repositioning the machine. Clamping pressure is controlled via the excavator's auxiliary hydraulic circuit and is adjustable to handle both delicate and heavy materials.
