The MCM 27X TLB is a versatile backhoe loader built for construction, agriculture, and earthmoving across South Africa. In short, this compact TLB combines front-loading and rear-digging into one reliable machine — so you only need one unit on site instead of two.
This backhoe loader runs a proven diesel engine with responsive hydraulics and a durable steel chassis. As a result, it handles years of daily use without missing a beat. The front bucket takes care of loading, grading, and material transport. Meanwhile, the rear backhoe delivers powerful digging for trenches, foundations, and drainage work.
In addition, operators benefit from a comfortable cabin with clear sightlines. This means safer, more productive shifts — even on long working days.
Construction contractors rely on this TLB for foundation excavation, trenching, and site preparation. Similarly, farmers use it for dam construction, irrigation channels, and general farm maintenance. Municipal teams also choose these machines for road repairs, drainage work, and utility installations. In fact, the 27X is one of the most popular compact TLBs in South Africa because of its versatility. Learn more about backhoe loaders and their role in the industry.
MCM Group offers a full range of backhoe loaders. For example, the MCM 18X TLB suits even tighter spaces, while the MCM 76X TLB delivers more power for heavy-duty work. The MCM 13X TLB is the smallest in the range. Browse the full Backhoe Loaders (TLB) range to find the right fit.

A practical guide for South African owner-operators considering the 27X — MCM's mid-compact mini-TLB.
The 27X is the right buy for the operator who works mostly on tight sites but still needs real lifting and digging capability, not just a glorified loader. Typical 27X buyers are: small-plot building contractors; landscapers and paving crews; farmers running irrigation, drainage, and fence-line work; municipal and estate maintenance teams; and start-up earthworks operators who need a single machine that can earn its keep across a wide range of jobs. If you need to lift 1 tonne of bricks onto a slab in the morning and dig a 1.5 m trench after lunch — without booking two different machines — the 27X is built for you.
A 27X will trench up to 1.6 m deep, lift up to 1 000 kg of bricks, cement, compost, or rubble, load a small tipper or trailer with the 0.5–0.6 m³ front bucket, and grade or push material around a typical residential or smallholding site. Realistic shift productivity: 20–35 cubic metres of soil moved or 8–12 tonnes of material loaded. The 37 kW Yunnei diesel sips fuel — typically 3.5–5 litres per hour under load — and the 2 800 kg operating weight means an experienced operator can work fast without churning soft ground.
Inside MCM's range, the 27X sits one step up from the 13X mini-TLB (lighter, smaller bucket, tighter access) and one step down from the 37X compact TLB (deeper dig, more loader payload). Compared to imported branded mini-TLBs at twice the price, the 27X delivers similar working performance, with parts and after-sales support based locally instead of overseas. For most owner-operators the choice is between the 27X and the 37X: pick the 27X if your sites are tight, your trenches stay below 1.6 m, and your loads stay under 1 tonne. Pick the 37X if you need the bigger dig depth or heavier payload.
At 2 800 kg operating weight, the 27X is one of the most trailer-friendly TLBs on the market — it travels comfortably on a standard 3.5-tonne braked trailer behind a one-tonne bakkie. No low-bed booking, no abnormal-load permit, no special transport contractor. That gives an owner-operator real flexibility: respond to call-outs same-day, move between sites without losing half a day to logistics, and trailer home overnight to keep the machine secure. MCM Group delivers and supports the 27X nationwide from our four branches: Cape Town, George, Gauteng, and Bloemfontein.
The 27X starts at R399 500 excl. VAT — comfortably the most accessible entry point into a real working TLB on the South African market. MCM Group offers instalment sale, financial lease, and operating lease finance through approved partners. Standard SARS wear-and-tear allowances apply, and the 27X qualifies under Section 12B for farming use. Read more in our finance structure tax guide. Manufacturer warranty is backed by MCM's local parts and technician network.
The 27X has been the workhorse of MCM's mini-TLB range since 2017 — the machine repeat customers come back for when they outgrow a skid-steer but don't yet need a full compact TLB. Operators consistently report the same two things: it punches above its weight on lift capacity, and it's cheap enough per hour to keep working profitably on small jobs other contractors won't touch. The serial-buyer pattern speaks for itself — owner-operators who buy a 27X usually buy their second one before they buy anything bigger.
